Hasthika and Kaushala - Smiles in Sri Lanka
Despite being together for years Hasthi managed to find a way to surprise me. He proposed in a boat on the coast of Barcelona, he said he was “feeling sick” the whole time and went to the front of the boat to get fresh air. I ran up to him thinking I need to help this guy from throwing up and next thing I know he was down on his knees. We had the best Spain trip afterwards and the song we played over and over in Seville ended up being our first song at the wedding.
The Day
Our wedding was in Weligama, a coastal town in Sri Lanka on December 23rd 2019. Having it in Sri Lanka meant a lot to us because both our extended families, but especially my Grandma who couldn’t travel, could be there. Plus we wanted to do something fun and different so loved the idea of giving our friends a taste of beautiful Sri Lanka!
Inspiration
We tried to mix the best of Sri Lankan traditions and our favourite kiwi vibes. We had a traditional Poruwa ceremony and our favourite part was the beautiful Poruwa structure inspired by my favourite flowers, orchids. During the evening reception we had a big focus on dancing, we had a massive dance floor and asked our close friends beforehand for their fave artists to inspire our band and DJ. As soon as we finished speeches and the band opened the dance floor, everyone ran on, it was the best feeling ever!
Expectations and Reality
Everybody told me to expect it to go fast but it actually felt like such a peaceful long day. It is because of who we had around us. We are so grateful to our bridal party and family who looked after us so well and made sure we had the happiest and calmest day.
From One Bride To Another
Focus your time and mind on the people that matter. Your best friends, family, and most importantly the person you’re marrying. It will make you feel excited and lucky during the whole process.
Best Moment
Our first dance! If you told me a year ago that I would give that answer I would laugh so much. I didn’t even think we would have a choreographed dance but Hasthi convinced me it would be fun to learn something together and it would mean a lot to his family who really love formal dancing. He was completely right! We had the best time learning the dance and we still sometimes play our first song and dance around the living room — it always takes me back to being so happy and surrounded by everyone we love.
